چکیده

Abstract The following text gives a brief overview of microwave radiative transfer in atmospheres covering the principles of radiative transfer in an absorbing and scattering atmosphere including surface reflection and emission. A few approaches for radiative transfer modelling are presented. Models for atmospheric absorption, particle absorption and scattering as well as surface emission are introduced. Please note that the reference frequency range was chosen to be 1-200 GHz which covers all current spaceborne microwave radiometer channels in operation for tropospheric remote sensing. As a description of current microwave radiative transfer problems, the COST-712 Project 1 report is recommended.

46: Principles of Radiative Transfer

The article gives an introduction to classical vector radiative transfer theory (RTT). It comprises a brief summary of the fundamental quantities in RTT and the corresponding definitions. Based on these quantities, the transfer equation for radiation will be introduced in its basic form for a plane-parallel, horizontally homogeneous atmosphere. Polarization and the Stokes vector are introduced,...

Intercomparison of microwave radiative transfer models for precipitating clouds

An intercomparison of microwave multiple scattering radiative transfer codes used in generating databases for satellite rainfall retrieval algorithms has been carried out to ensure that differences obtained from retrieval techniques do not originate from the underlying radiative transfer code employed for the forward modeling. A set of profiles containing liquid water and ice contents of cloud ...

Simulations of the Atmospheric Microwave and Millimeter Wave Emission from Venus using a Radiative

Introduction: The Georgia Tech Venus Radiative Transfer Model (VRTM) can be used to model the effects of the abundances of microwave and millimeter wave absorbing constituents on the emission from the Venus troposphere and mesosphere. The primary components of the Venus atmosphere are CO2 and N2, but variation in concentration of sulfur compounds, specifically gaseous H2SO4 and SO2, result in c...

Radiative heat transfer: many-body effects

Heat transfer by electromagnetic radiation is one of the common methods of energy transfer between objects. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we have studied the effect of particle arrangement in the transmission of radiative heat in many-body systems. In order to show the effect of the structure morphology on the collective properties, the radiative heat transfer is studied and the re...

Microwave Snow Emission Model and Its Contributing Parameters

Satellites with microwave sensors onboard observing land surface from space consist of signal contributions from surface and atmosphere. The upwelling microwave signals are less attenuated by the atmosphere hence, for earthly located features remote sensing satellite microwave sensors have an advantage over visible sensor systems. In order to monitor snow cover with passive microwave data, brig...
